Signs it’s time to visit your Optometrist for an eye test
We have an extensive database of regular clients at Respectacle Company who understand the importance of regular eye examinations. Still, we also have some customers registered with us who haven’t had their eyes tested in forever – probably because they feel their vision is fine.
A lot of people only book an appointment for a check-up when they start to experience problems with their vision. However, an eye examination is so much more than just checking whether you can read the small print on a package in the supermarket.
So, how can you tell if it’s time for an eye test – what are the signs and how often should you have an eye examination?
How often should I have my eyes examined – and can I get a free eye test?
Under the current NHS guidelines, everyone should have an eye examination every two years. However, there are exceptions to the rule. For example, if you have an underlying health issue – such as a family history of glaucoma, a complex prescription, or you are at risk of frequent changes. Then you should be seen by your optometrist more frequently.
Millions of people in England are entitled to a free NHS eye examination – it’s estimated somewhere in the region of 30 million! To be eligible for an NHS-funded eye test – and yes, we offer them here at Respectacle Company in Market Harborough – one of the following categories must apply:
- You are under the age of 16 years old
- You are aged 16-18 and in full-time education
- You are over the age of 60
- You have a complex prescription
- You are registered blind
- You are over 40 years old and have a direct relative with glaucoma
- You have been diagnosed with diabetes or glaucoma

As well as comprehensive eye examinations we also offer OCT scans
How do I know when it’s time to get an eye examination?
Whether or not you qualify for a free NHS sight test, it is also important to remember that you shouldn’t wait for the standard 2-year timeline if you experience symptoms or have any issues with your sight – eye health warning signs should always be taken seriously. So, if you are having vision problems, you should visit your local optician and have an eye exam without delay.
A comprehensive eye examination does more than check your vision – it also checks the health of your eyes. So, what are the signs that indicate an eye test is needed?
Warning signs of potential eye health problems include eye pain, pink or inflamed eyes, black floaters, a shadow or ‘veil’ over part of your vision, and flashing lights. These symptoms can sometimes be a sign of a serious eye condition that requires urgent attention. Never ignore a sudden change in your vision – it should always be investigated by an eye care professional.
Some issues don’t necessarily present with symptoms. For example, changes to the macula or pressure within the eye can indicate conditions such as macular degeneration or glaucoma. If detected early enough, these eye conditions can be treated and managed successfully to either improve, slow or stop the condition from progressing – another reason why regular check-ups to monitor your eye health are so important.
