Eyewear Politics: Which Party Does Your Frame Belong To? Part Two: Welcome to the Coalition
In Part One of our eyewear politics blog, we explored the main parties of the eyewear political spectrum. The Bold campaigners. The Edgy rebels. The Subtle diplomats. The Classic traditionalists. The Minimalist technocrats. And the Activists who believe beige is a political statement in itself.
But what if none of them sounds like you? Or, perhaps more likely, what if all of them sound a little bit like you? Well, welcome to Part Two of our eyewear political series, where things get considerably less straightforward. Because when it comes to glasses, there is one very important rule we stand by at Respectacle Company: You are allowed to change your mind.
The Retro Party: The Nostalgic Revivalists
The Retro Party believes the best ideas sometimes come back around. We’re talking cat-eyes, vintage-inspired round frames, oversized 60s shapes and 70s influences; they all have a place in the Retro Party’s eyewear wardrobe.
Their supporters aren’t necessarily interested in looking like they’ve stepped straight out of another decade. They simply appreciate the shapes, proportions and character that make vintage eyewear so enduring. After all, retro isn’t about copying the past – it’s about giving it a modern spin.
Their manifesto: Everything old is new again.
And perhaps that’s why vintage-inspired eyewear continues to find new supporters. Great design often has a habit of surviving the trends that were supposed to replace it.

The Colour Party: The Chromatic Coalition
The Colour Party has one simple question: Why settle for black or brown frames?
These are the people who understand that colour can completely change a frame, and sometimes an entire outfit. Bright acetates, unexpected combinations, translucent tones, rich jewel colours and playful patterns all have a place here.
Colour Party supporters aren’t always loud or extroverted. Sometimes the person wearing the most colourful glasses in the room is actually the quietest person in it. The difference is that they allow their eyewear to do the talking for them.
Campaign slogan: Neutral is not compulsory.
For some people, the right colour can be just as important as the shape of a frame. It can complement their colouring, lift an outfit or simply make them smile every time they put their glasses on. And really, isn’t that reason enough? We certainly think so here at Respectacle Company.

The Avant-Garde Party: The Visionary Independents
Then there are the people who look at a conventional pair of glasses and think: But what if we did something completely different from everyone else?
The Avant-Garde Party is where eyewear becomes design. Sculptural shapes, unusual proportions, and unexpected materials all belong here. These are frames that challenge the idea of what glasses are supposed to look like.
Their supporters are the true independents of the eyewear parliament. They aren’t trying to make a statement. They simply have a strong appreciation for design and don’t see any reason to play it safe. Because to them, safe means boring.
Their political philosophy: There’s more than one way to look at things.
This is where independent eyewear really comes into its own power. Away from the mass-market mould, independent designers have the freedom to experiment, innovate and create frames with genuine personality.

The Practical Party: The Sensible Swing Voters
We appreciate not everyone wants to make a political statement with their glasses. Some people just want their specs to do the job of correcting their vision.
The Practical Party has a clear list of priorities: Comfort, versatility, and durability. And something that looks good with absolutely everything.
They’re the sensible swing voters of eyewear. They don’t want a frame that only works with one outfit. They want one they can put on every morning and know they’ve made the right decision. And frankly, that’s more than reasonable.
The Practical Party may occasionally be tempted by something a little more adventurous, but only after conducting a thorough risk assessment before making the leap.
Their manifesto: Great glasses should work as hard as you do.

The Non-Conformer Party: The Multipair Mavericks
And then there are the people who refuse to join any single party. We call them the non-conformers. These are the multipair wearers; the people who understand that no single frame can represent every version of themselves.
They might have a bold pair for social occasions, an edgy pair for creative days, something more subtle for work and a classic pair for weekends. Their eyewear wardrobe is essentially a coalition government of distinctly different styles, each chosen with intention.
And this might just be the most sensible political position of all. Because why should your glasses have to represent the same version of you every single day? You don’t wear the same clothes for every occasion. And your mood can change from one day to the next. So why should your eyewear? It’s a fair point.
The Great Eyewear Coalition
Perhaps the real lesson of eyewear politics is that you actually don’t have to choose. Your glasses can be bold one day and subtle the next. You can love classic tortoiseshell and still have a pair of brightly coloured pink or yellow frames hiding in your drawer.
You can be a minimalist at 9am and an avant-garde revolutionary after 5pm. There are no party whips in eyewear. No compulsory voting either. And thankfully, you won’t have to defend your choice in a televised debate. The beauty of independent eyewear is that there is room for all of it.
